I have to say kids, I was very underwhelmed by the looks this year. There was not one look that made me gasp and say "Oh! Look! I'm DYING that's outRAGEOUS!", which is how I usually pick my best dressed. 100% on emotional and sometimes physical reaction. But this year, nothin'. There were a lot more solid worst-dressed contenders. However, I'd like to start on a positive note. Let's get down to business.
1. Most improved: Jessica Chastain
(ew.com)
Hooray!!!! She's back on the top of my list. Thank heavens. Her hair was perfection, the dress (Alexander McQueen) was gorgeous. The necklace wasn't my cup of tea, but she's out of the woods at least. I'm so relieved.
2. The Half-and-Half Award: Anne Hathaway
(huffingtonpost.com)
(Giambattista Valli) I loved the top. Gorgeous. Ladylike. Flattering. Perfect hair and makeup.
Then they panned down.
What? Come ON Hathaway! This would have been a best-dressed contender for me FOR SURE if the skirt had just been the ankle-length tulle full skirt that I THOUGHT it was. Is it shorts under there? Hotpants? A glittery mini? --- I shouldn't be wondering these things! Best dressed on top, worst on the bottom.
3. Best Makeup: Claire Danes
(celebuzz.com)
Chris disagrees here, but I thought it was different and bold and beautiful. Bold, but NOT beautiful?: the neckline choice of the individual on the right.
4. The Hire-a-new-stylist Award: Julianne Moore
(commercialappeal.com)
(Chanel) This infuriates me. She was almost Worst Dressed but I felt like it was unfair to her personally. And I'll tell you why: If I leave the house looking a hot mess, I have only myself and Chris to blame. These actors have entire TEAMS of people who are PAID to tell them, "Hey, this dress doesn't fit you. Maybe we should have the tailor come in. Or add cups. Or pick SOMETHING ELSE". You know that you are going to be photographed until the cows come home and you have unlimited resources at your fingertips. How can you leave the house in something that doesn't fit correctly? (Clearly I am still very much upset by this.)
4. The Doppelganger Award: January Jones
6. Best Hair: Kiernan Shipka
(krmg.com)
She is delightful. Perfectly naturally highlighted (I'm going to pretend that no one is messing with the hair color of someone this young, but I'm probably wrong), perfectly styled and 100% age-appropriate - which is so refreshing (I'm looking at you, Modern Family girls).
7. Worst Hair: Morena Baccarin
(bellasugar.com)
Uh...what?
And now ladies and gentlemen, the main event.
7. Worst Dressed: Rose Byrne
(mtv.com)
(Valentino) Besides the Julianne Moore tragedy, I had the most emotional reaction to this one. I didn't see her on the carpet, only when she came out to present. So picture this thing in all its frilly glory, with the air whipping through it, ruffles at full attention, as she walks across the stage. My reaction went something like this, "what the - what? Is that -- what --oh god--really--oh my --what?".
Rose? ROSE? You are like the hottest little thing! Why are you wearing a garden party dress that is fit for Dame Maggie Smith? Everything is so covered-up and the ruffles are so oddly placed down the side seam, making her look so much wider than she is. Between the silhouette and the print, it is too informal for this even, IMHO. And her hair is too together - I want to mess it up and deconstruct it juuuust a little bit.
8. Best Dressed (?): Amanda Seyfried
(glamour.com)
(bellasugar.com)
(usweekly.com)
(Zac Posen) I added the question mark, because as I've said - no one really wow-ed me. But Amanda looked all sorts of amazing in this gown. I thought the cut of it was extremely flattering, and in the right light you can see that it has a lot of detailing at the front that was lost in a lot of her red carpet pictures (US Weekly got a good one). The drama at the train was just enough wow-factor to make this almost-simple navy gown stand out. Her hair was perfectly styled for wearing it down, and the unconventional jewelry choice seemed to work as well.
Until next time folks, happy Monday!
