Some Bridal Work

There really is nothing I love more than doing wedding-related things.  I am a sucker for all things bridal.  That's why I was so excited when I was contacted by an ol' college pal to do some sketches for some girls in her family.   Hope they love!

Prom!

Holy crap its been so long.

But its prom season, and things have been, well, prommy.

Bitsy:

This is my baby sister.  Who is just went to her senior prom. And then graduated. I'm old.

Caroline:

This is Chris's cousin.  I met her when she was about 11...12 maybe?  Again, feeling old.

Anyway, we're back in the swing of things in the studio, getting out a few wedding sketches, some summer sun dresses, and preparing for Prom 2014.

Scanners Stink

So what I have discovered now that I am doing all of my sketches in marker is that scanners are awful.  You'd think the big expensive one at work would be better than our clunky Canon at home.  Nope.  I decided to snap a picture of one of my recent ones - a bridal sketch of Deege.

Deege got married in December - a BLAST of a wedding - and I decided to sketch her dress in marker (I will post another sketch colored in Photoshop later - its on my laptop).

*Interested in custom bridal illustration from your big day or a as a gift? I'm much cheaper than the going rate :) Shoot me an email @ cat.munzing@gmail.com

Curated.

A few weeks ago, a dear friend of mine connected me with Curated., an interior design firm based out of Los Angeles and New York.  They came up with this awesome design of a tote bag that turns into a chic scarf, and they needed some illustrations for their presentation.  I sent them a bunch of my sketches and they decided I was their gal!  It may have had something to do with the fact that since I'm just starting out in this fashion illustration game, I'm way cheaper than the rest of their candidates.  So we both win.

Here are the final images submitted after a few rounds of edits and adjustments:

Pretty fun, right?  I feel like I need one of these in my life.  I'm a sucker for any black-and-white graphic print.  It was really awesome working with them and I'm hoping this leads to more work!

Edith

We are a season behind on Downton Abbey and it is EXTREMELY hard to keep away from spoilers. So while I  may not be able to enjoy the surprise of certain plot points, I always enjoy the costumes. Like I probably gasp out loud at least once an episode at these dresses.

Here's a quick sketch I did of Edith:

I've started going through all my sketching supplies, throwing out used-up markers, sharpening pencils, deciding what I need to replenish.  Clearly I need some skin-tone markers.  I need to step away from the photoshop and get back to the natural look of my old sketching.  What do you think?

Sketch-a-day.

Well, we saw how good I was keeping up with Magazine Monday, so this is a bit ambitious.

I'm going to try to do one sketch a day in it's entirety. I have a few themes I'm working on (Bridal. Get excited.) to help me along, as well as just outfit-of-the-day sketches and projects I'm making in the studio.

This is Sketch #1 for a lovely lady named Jen that I've known since she was a little tyke.  She received a Cat Got Dressed giftcard last year and is going to use it towards a fun summer dress.

(I was trying a more abstract technique here...)

Magazine Monday (on Tuesday?)

Here's a quick sketch I did sunday morning at the crack of dawn because I couldn't sleep.  I don't remember what magazine or what designer.  I'm the worst.

Friday Flowers

Happy Friday ladies and gents!

I've been in serious prom-dress-mode, but took a break to make this little number for an event I have on Saturday (which I'm not sure is a surprise or not so I will not be specific as to what it is).

Here's the sketch:

Here's the terribly-lit instagram:

I'll try to get a pic snapped tomorrow of yours truly wearing it.

Have a great weekend!

Magazine Monday

I'm thinking of starting a weekly themed sketch every Monday.  Let's see how long this one sticks...

This weeks look is brought to you today by Céline (I figured out how to type that accented 'e'), via Marie Claire.  I loved the bright tomato-red skirt paired with a sleek black turtleneck.  Chic.

Prom Progress

Happy Monday ladies and gentlemen.

It was a very productive weekend over at the Munzing house.  All sorts of excitement happening!  We got some new windows, Lady's litterbox is officially in the basement, and Caroline's prom dress is halfway done!

As a little reminder, here's the sketch:

Cutting out the lace / basting it to the silk:
This is always a very time-consuming task but always well worth it.

Draping the one-shoulder detail:
Loving the way the trim on the lace works for this part...

Looks almost done?:
Well its only about halfway finished.  I still need to construct all the support boning on the interior, cut & sew the lining and insert the zipper (always a hoot, especially with beaded fabric).

Hopefully we'll have a fitting next weekend :)

Saturday Sketching

Here are some sketches for a project I have coming up over the next year.  I'll keep it mum for now, but  its going to be pretty darn awesome.

Some doodling...

So I've been doodling on the train... this is what I wore yesterday.  I've been working on my faces, what do you think?  I think I'm happy with them.  I think I'm also happy it is friday.

Bridesmaids

Boy, do I have wedding fever.

I'm doing another wedding!  I'm so very excited for it.  I am creating the wedding gown, and then two bridesmaids dresses as well - and this is not your average wedding dress.  The bride is one of the most unique, most stylish people I've had the pleasure to meet, and I'm honored that she chose me to design and create her gown. But more on that at a later time...

I'm also doing a bridesmaid dress for a gal whose bride is doing one of those muted pastel themed bridal parties - no nominated dress, just pick a little frock in a different shade:

Here are my first sketches for Emily (she chose a very light grey in a gorgeous crinkle-chiffon):

I'll keep you posted on what she choses!

Watercolor Therapy

This weekend called for a lot of relaxing - It has been a very stressful few weeks.   Even though we had a bunch to do this weekend, I was able to sit for an hour or two on sunday, throw on some relaxing classical tunes (WQXR if you're in the NY area), and dig into my little $10 set of watercolor supplies.  I find I sometimes waste money on my new 'ideas' before I really decide if I like them or not, so $10 seemed like enough for the first try.  Here are the results...

I love the texture of watercolor paper - gives the sketch a little life.

Practicing faces...

Some ideas for an upcoming event...

I think I like this watercolor thing.  I hope you all find a relaxing outlet to help you unwind.

Caroline in Blue

I started sketching for Caroline's prom dress a few weeks (months?) ago and we finally decided on a design:

Can't wait to get started!

*In sketching news, I've decided to try my hand at watercoloring my sketches....fun weekend project? Or disaster waiting to happen?
